PORVORIM: Nearly 6,000 telephone lines in Porvorim, which were disrupted due to reckless digging during the road widening work near Sai Service on Wednesday night, were partially restored on Thursday.
Speaking to Herald, a BSNL officer stated that 6,000 landlines were hit due to damage to the main optical cable. “Road-widening work is being carried out by the Public Works Department along the National Highway 17 at Porvorim. While digging the area with JCB excavators, the optical fibre cable was damaged near Sai Service, due to which 6,000 lines went dead,” informed the officer.
“Since the incident occurred at 8 pm on Wednesday, it took quite a long time for the linesmen to locate the fault. Now that the location has been identified, the lines on the existing cable have been transferred to another optical fibre cable and the damaged cable is being replaced,” he added.
“However, most of the lines have been restored and the remaining lines will be restored soon.”
Affected residents called BSNL office and newspapers since Wednesday evening to know why their landlines were not working.
“When they were alerted of this incident, the BSNL should have issued a press note informing its customers that the lines had gone dead due to a technical snag,” complained a resident.
