VASCO: The work to remove the remnants of German vessel namely Ehrenfels and Brownfels which is lying in sea bed close to Khariwado coast commenced.
According to Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) officials, a Mumbai based salvage company has been awarded the task to remove the remnants of the German vessel that capsized during World War-II (since then the shipwreck has been lying in the seabed near Khariwado shore) and was a big hindrance for the Vasco bay development plan.
“Though we have identified three such ship wreckages, however as decided by the board, the work to remove wrecks of German vessels was our first priority and the work for the same has already started since last week and the other shipwrecks would be removal at a later stage. Since we want to construct fishing harbour at Vasco bay, we are removing the wrecks of German vessels before constructing the harbor,” an MPT official informed Herald.
“The removal of shipwrecks is part of the proposed development of Vasco Bay plan. The wrecks of German vessels are located 300 meters northern side of berth Number 10-11. It is a buried exactly where fishing harbor and liquid cargo jetty has been planned. The removal of the shipwrecks would be beneficial for smooth and obstruction free movement of fishing vessels,” he added.
