PANJIM: In a major decision, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has decided to restore the pre-pandemic single-exam format for the Class X and XII board from the coming academic year 2023-24 onwards, which means the board examinations will not be split into two parts- Term I and Term II.

In view of COVID-19 pandemic, the ‘Special Scheme of Assessment’ — a significant overhaul of Board examination, under which the Class X and XII Board exams were held in two parts- first term board examination in November and second term in March-April- was introduced in 2021-22 academic term and was later extended to 2022-23.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Goa Board Chairman Bhagirath Shetye said, “The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) have decided to revert to the old format of single examination as they are of the view that too many exams will put additional stress on the students.”
“Accordingly, we have also decided to discontinue with the format from the coming academic year onwards,” he said adding ‘the concept of periodic tests would continue’.
As per the assessment scheme, the schools were undertaking the internal assessments of students of Class X and XII throughout the academic year and have to retain the evidence in digital format. The final result was declared based on the assessment of first and second term examination.
As per the scheme, for Class X and XII general steam (non-practical subject) students answered 40 marks exam each for the first term in multiple choice question and second term was based on subjective questions. Two internal tests of 20 marks each were conducted in the first term and one test — innovative test — during the second term will be conducted.
For those with practical subjects, the first term was of 40 marks while the second term was of 30 marks and a 20 marks year end practical.
