PERNEM: After Corgao and Dhargal panchayats, Morjim Gram Sabha on Sunday passed a resolution to discontinue rituals of widowhood after the demise of their husbands.
The resolution was proposed by the Shri Satpurush Village Organisation and Nirbhaya Gram Mahila Seva Sangh. The organisations insisted that women should be treated as any other women even after demise of her husband. Another villager said that people should first change their mentality of calling a women widow after death of husband and perspective of looking at her should be changed. If this happens then automatically, the rites which have continued from last several decades will also end.
The gram sabha also resolved not to build any public crematorium in the vicinity of the Morjim church followed by the objection raised by catholic community present for the gram sabha.
Panchyat had proposed to build a public crematorium in area of 500 sqm land.
A family who owns the land in the vicinity had offered this land to the panchayat for the crematorium however, members of the Catholic community submitted a written resolution requesting the panchayat not to build any such crematorium.
