Sao Minguel de Taleigao Sports Club came from behind to score a 3-2- victory over hosts Baina Sports Club to enter the quarter-finals of 37th Bandodkar Memorial Football Trophy tournament at MPT ground, here on Sunday.
Baina surprised Sao Minguel in the 20th minute with Paulo Sequeira scoring after Sayed Ahmed Gani had done the spadework. But their joy was shortlived as Valencio Estrocio equalized shooting over advancing goalkeeper Elister D’Sa.
After the change of ends, experienced Taleigao started with renewed ideas and scored two goals in quick succession through their prolific forward Cedric Peixoto who was later declared man-of-the match. Hard working Damu Pascoal Herzog reduced the margin for Baina during the dying minutes.
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Revenue Minister, Jose Phillip D’Souza in the presence of Rajan Bhosle, president of Baina Sports Club and other office-bearers of the club. A one-minute’s silence was observed in memory of Dayanand Bandodkar in whose memory the tournament is being organised.
In all, 16 teams, seven from North, seven from South and two from Ilhas are participating in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Jose Philip distributed soccer kits to the team alongwith coach Umer Muthavali during the new jersey launching ceremony at La Paz Garden Hotel, on Thursday. Others present were, BSC president, Rajan Bhosle, former MMC chairman, Kritesh Gaonkar, BSC ex-president, Andrew Rodrigues and Adv TT Sashidaran.
Jack Fernandes compered. Navnath Naik welcomed. Tulshidas Gadekar proposed the vote of thanks.
