PANJIM: A spell of incessant rains on Saturday morning until afternoon accompanied with the high tide led to flooding in most of the low lying areas of the capital including Patto and Neogi Nagar.
Houses along the creek were inundated due to the overflowing Rua De Ourem creek and residents had a difficult time emptying their homes as the rainwater flooded their homes.
As resident stated that this was the first monsoons when the water has inundated their homes and damaged their belongings. “We have been living on the bank of the creek for as long as 40 years and never have we witnessed such a thing. The sluice gates have been closed and there is no thorough flow of water which has led to the creek overflowing and inundating our houses”, he informed.
Women and men used mugs and buckets to empty their homes. “We are continuously trying to empty our homes off the water so that the belongings do not get damaged. We have limited resources and would not want to further bear losses by losing our belongings to the rainwater entering our homes from the creek”, a woman stated.
Patto area behind the KTC Bus Sand in Panjim too was flooded and most parts of the area remained inundated until evening hours. Tiswadi Locals who had gathered for the CZMP presentations organised by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) faced hardships while returning home after the meeting.
People had to walk through more than knee-deep water as the area was completely under water.
Even students attending music classes at the Sanskriti Bhavan were caught unaware when they walked out of the Central Library premises with the rains inundating the area.
