PONDA: The officials of the Kundaim based paint company on Friday agreed to pay a compensation of Rs 12 lakh to its worker Kishore Gaude (51) who died of burn injuries suffered in a self immolation attempt.
The agreement was reached at a meeting held at the Ponda Police Station attended by the Mamlatdar, Ponda PI Harish Madcaikar, paint company officials, Priol Sarpanch Mangaldas Gaude and workers employed at various units operating in Kundaim Industrial Estate.
After a prolonged negotiations lasting around five hours, the company officials reportedly agreed to pay Rs 12 lakh as compensation to the widow of Kishore Gaude on February 27.
Frustrated at his year-long suspension and stressed due to lack of income, on February 16, Gaude had doused in kerosene and set himself on fire in front of the company gate. He suffered 60 per cent burn injuries in the incident and was undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College Hospital when he breathed his last on Thursday evening.
Following the assurance by the company officials to pay compensation to the widow of Gaude, locals and the sarpanch, who in morning refused to take possession of the body of Gaude, have now decided to accept it and perform the final rites.
Gaude is survived by two sons, a daughter and his widow who is undergoing treatment in a hospital after she suffered a shock following the death of her husband.
Friday morning, on getting the news of the death of Gaude, workers of various companies protested in front of gates of the paint company demanding justice.
