Margao: Residents of a Ward II of Fatorda have united against the rampant land filling of a low lying area in the name of a fish market. The residents assembled at the site on Friday and highlighted the reckless and unplanned land filling of a low lying area. The residents have warned the authorities to take immediate precautions to avoid water filling failing to which the houses and buildings besides the open space will be under water in the monsoons.
The open space in Fatorda Ward II has been acting like a reservoir of water coming from the adjoining high land. The residents say that this space turns into a lake in the monsoons holding maximum of the water but still letting some water in the residential projects besides it. One of the local women informs that in rains, waist deep water fills the access and the open spaces of their colony. The open space has been now filled with mud 6 to 8 feet above ground level and now the fear of flooding in adjoining area lurks.
Sudesh Nagvenkar, Resident of Ward II Fatorda says, “We don’t have problem with the fish market or the land filling but please tell us how the authorities will stop the lakhs of litres of rain and storm water flowing in to this place. Our houses are definitely going to go under water in the monsoons.”
A local youth informed that the provision of a 2-meter nullah made besides the landfill thins down to a half meter gutter downhill which is definitely not going to hold the extreme quantities of water.
The residents have not objected to the facilities but have asked for prior prevention of any anticipated calamity from happening.
