Then, Indians dreamt dreams, of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. Having worn the crown of independence, where do we stand today?
Nowadays in independent India, we find politicians bypass all laws, bend them, break them, and even mould them to their benefit. They carry an eye wash type of inquiry to shield their favourite. Some one said, “If a fox takes a fowl, they set the same fox to find out the culprit. If modern Sherlock Homes, find out wrongdoers, politicians do not reveal the finding to the public and thus hide the truth.”
Also, in free Bharat, the rich bribe the police who carry on technically defective investigation to favour the wealthy. So, free people of Hindustan are reluctant to stand as witness because protection against intimidation is doubtful. So, the poor languish in jails and the corrupt rich go unpunished and freely live in cities.
Sixty seven years ago we breathed the fresh air of liberty to speak and to believe in whatever God we think fit.
But this liberty to speak has been stretched to such an extent that we think freedom means liberty to announce Bharat bandh, free will to burn buses, freedom to block roads, self-rule to stamp the roads and shouts “Zindabad and Murdabad.” We have forgotten that every liberty imposes a duty. We talk anything and everything that comes to our mind; and we do not know when to stop. Really, we do not understand that if at all we have to criticise, it has to be constructive and not destructive.
The framers of the constitution gave us the freedom of religion.
But today, honourable cheats incite independent Indians to die for religion rather than live for it. They even provoke free-people of Bharat to destroying places of worships. It looks as if the peace of freedom has said goodbye to independent Indians.
It appears that our dream of freedom of movement to reside and settle anywhere, between the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean — called Bharat, India and Hindustan— is polluted by the ‘son of the soil’ theory i.e. Punjab for Punjabis, Assam for Assamese. Oh! Where is the fraternal soil of independent India?
Sixty seven years ago, Indians dreamt dreams of equality because all men are created equal by God — a Supernatural being, who does not say He is a Hindu God, a Christian God or a Muslim God. But today we find that all men are not equal for all things. Very, very important persons are different from very, very ordinary independent Indian citizens.
