MARGAO: All Goa FMCG & Telecom Distributors Association (AGFTDA), a union of over 500 businessmen who are distributors of FMCG, commodities, telecom and electrical goods have urged MMC to issue clear guidelines to Margao municipality sopo collectors not to collect sopo tax from the vehicles which come in the municipal area for supplying goods.
AGFTDA has demanded immediate action towards a complaint raised by their Margao zone member, Samarth Talaulikar.
To the best of my knowledge, sopo tax is a fee collected from people who occupy a certain place in the municipal area to display and sell their goods or wares. I fail to understand how a vehicle which comes to deliver goods should fall into the preview of Sopo tax, the letter written by AGFTDA member said.
AGFTDA informed that in the past, they have received complaints from their members that Sopo collectors in Agassaim and Merces were engaged in similar activities.
to extort money from gullible and hapless vehicle drivers. They have stopped their unauthorised collection now.
The AGFTDA has requested MMC to issue them in writing that the delivery vehicles do not fall under the purview of the sopo tax.
