MARGAO: The Congress Legislator from Curtorim Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has demanded setting up of fast track courts across the country for the speedy disposal of all rape cases.
His statement comes on the backdrop of the rape cases in Goa and India.
“The fast track court trial has to be completed within six months; amendment to law to make hanging in public so as to deter people committing such heinous acts of rape or equivalent in the future,” Reginaldo said.
He reminded that in Goa too, a minor school girl in Vasco, who was raped in her school toilet in 2013, is still awaiting justice due to the reasons best known to former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar and the administration of BJP.
“I hope our current two most powerful leaders of our country — Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah –will also display their real intent with tearing speed in pursuing all the cases against all rape accused and getting these sexual offenders awarded fast with the capital punishment after following the due process of law,” Reginaldo said.
He reminded that the last Friday’s death of Unnao rape victim, who was set on fire on the way to court hearing, should make the civilised society hang its head in shame.
“I hope the accused MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar (a BJP person) and the other five people involved in setting the victim on fire are given capital punishment after expeditiously following of the due process of law,” he said.
Condemning the gang rape and murder of a veterinarian on the outskirts of Hyderabad, he said, “Though I fear public backlash leading to more such police encounters which is not a good sign for a vibrant democracy like ours, which has an independent judiciary as one of its important pillars. Without following the due process of law, the December 6, 2019, 3 am killing of the four unarmed suspects by 10 armed cops of Hyderabad Police at the rape site lacks credibility,” Reginaldo said.
“Will all the other rape cases would be treated in the same manner and the status of existing cases would also follow the same path as above?” Reginaldo questioned.
