Maina Sports Club blanked Ambelim Sports Club 2-0 to enter the quarter-finals of Sao Jose de Areal Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club at Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal on Sunday. There was no score at the lemon break.
In an evenly fought encounter especially in the first half, chances were far and few as the defenders of both teams did not allow any space to manoeuvre inside their penalty areas.
Crossing over, Maina up an improved display and called the shots against Ambelim’s citadel. Maina broke the deadlock soon after the break when striker Primo Fernandes’ snap shot saw Ambelim goalkeeper caught by the sunrays and the ball escaped his clutch.
Despite being a goal down, Ambelim were not willing to call it a day as they made concerted efforts to equalise but their efforts proved futile as the rival stubborn defence was alert in foiling their attempts.
Jossie Fernandes doubled the lead with a stiff grounder for Maina in the 40th minute.
Samson Fernandes of Ambelim whose heroic efforts went in vain was named man-of-the match.
