As part of the 100-year birth celebrations of legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, the
Consulate General of Sweden in Mumbai, in collaboration with International Film
Festival of India in Goa, is delighted to bring his select works to the city
which will be screened under Retrospective of Masters.The screenings will take
place between November 21 and 28, 2018 at Maquinez Palace II, Panjim.
#Bergman100 is sweeping the world in
celebration of what would have been the legendary director’s 100th birthday.
New digitisations of his films by the Swedish Film Institute have enabled the
entire world to participate in the celebration.

“We thank the International Film Festival
of India in Goa for the special tribute to Ingmar Bergman in what would have
been his 100th birth anniversary,” says Ulrika Sundberg, Consul General,
General Consulate of Sweden in Mumbai. “Ingmar Bergman is undoubtedly one of
the best-known Swedes in the world. He is widely regarded as one of the
foremost filmmakers in cinematic history and has directed more than 40
feature-length films. He was also a prolific scriptwriter, dramatist and
author.”
The retrospective opens on November 21, 2018 with a panel
discussion on The Cinema of Ingmar Bergman with experts from Sweden. The panel
will be moderated by Sunit Tandon, Director of India Habitat Centre (former
Director of the Directorate of Film Festivals in India and noted television and
theatre personality). This will be followed by the screening of ‘Wild
Strawberries’, often considered to be one of Bergman’s greatest and most moving
films.
Other films featured in the Retrospective are ‘The Seventh
Seal’, ‘Persona’, ‘Saraband, Summer with Monika’, ‘Autumn Sonata’ and ‘Fanny
and Alexander’. ‘Bergman Island’, a documentary where the filmmaker ruminates
on his work, will also be screened.
“The huge interest in celebrating Bergman 100 exceeds our
highest expectations! Though great art is indeed timeless, it still needs the
support from public and private institutions to remain available. Most
importantly, though, it needs the support of the audience. The art of Bergman,
luckily, enjoys all of these,” says Jan Holmberg, CEO at the Ingmar Bergman
Foundation.
The
year 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Ingmar Bergman: world-famous
filmmaker, legendary theatre director and exceptional writer. After his passing
in 2007, Bergman has furthermore become one of Scandinavia’s most-performed
playwrights. Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala on July 14, 1918, and the
Jubilee, starting in Autumn 2017 and continuing throughout 2018, will take
place over the entire world, with theatrical performances, exhibitions,
documentaries, film retrospectives, book releases and festivals.
