VASCO: A 24-year-old helper at the Sancoale IDC allegedly killed his wife in a rented room at New Vaddem, Vasco, before committing suicide by throwing himself under a moving train in Verna.
According to police, they received information that Sangeeta Devi Gautam (22), the wife of Sunil Kumar Gautam (24), was found dead in a rented room in New Vaddem on Friday afternoon. Their investigation revealed that the couple hailed from Uttar Pradesh and had come down to Goa last month. They were staying in a temporary accommodation provided by Elister Martins in New Vaddem for the last few days. Martins had employed Sunil as a helper and his wife as a housekeeper for a pharma company at Sancoale IDC.
“At around 9.30 am on Thursday, the employer noticed the couple having a heated argument about personal issues in the company premises. He first gave them a warning and later asked them to quit their jobs as they were disturbing the peace in the company. He also asked them to vacate their rented premises that same day. After returning to the rented room, the couple had another heated argument. At around 4.30 pm, the neighbours noticed that the husband had locked the house and gone somewhere,” police said.
Police further said, “The neighbours also informed Elister about the fight between the couple. He sent his friend Vaibhav Satardekar to check whether the couple had vacated the room, and if it was found locked, then to even change the lock by breaking the old one. However, after Vaibhav broke open the lock, he found the woman lying dead inside the room and the body was in a decomposed state.”
The police suspect that the husband might have killed his wife as he was very possessive of her and used to have frequent fights over her character.
“Possibly out of suspicion, he picked up a quarrel with his wife and in a fit of anger, killed her and left the house after locking it from the outside,” said Vasco DySP Suchita Desai.
While Vasco police were searching for the husband, they received information that Konkan railway police had recovered the body of a male from the railway track at Verna; on searching the body, police found a voter identity card belonging to Sunil.
“We suspect that the husband first killed his wife and then committed suicide by throwing himself under a moving train. The Konkan railway police have registered the case as an unnatural death, and we have also registered his wife’s death as unnatural. Only after the postmortem we will decide the course of the probe,” said Ms Desai.
