“We immediately got onto the jet-ski to pull them out of the water after we saw the boat sinking at around 7.30 am,” Drishti lifeguard Vishal Khandeparkar, who was responsible for the rescue, told the media.
According to information, at about 7 am approx 50 mtrs to the left of the Miramar lifeguard tower, lifeguard Reshar Kundaikar noticed a fishing trawler stranded around 250 mtrs from the shore. Khandeparkar launched the jet-ski and approached the fishing trawler after a distress call was placed over the radio by the crew. Khandeparkar rescued the crew members and dropped them to the shore.
A jet-ski from Calangute was also directed to the spot to provide possible back-up. Lifeguards informed that all 31 crew members were rescued one by one and brought to the shore safely. The reasons for capsizing of the boat are being ascertained by the fisheries department. According to the lifeguards, the boat was carrying some quantity of fish and other articles. They said it will be pulled ashore only on Thursday.
“No, it cannot be pulled out from the sea today (Wednesday). It will be possible only tomorrow (Thursday),” another lifeguard Nilesh Dhuri said.
