PANJIM: Commuters’ woes piled up as huge traffic blockades continued to choke up the Porvorim and CHOGM road on Thursday.

The enormous volume of traffic on these route made things worse for travellers from Panjim to Mapusa on the national highway 66. To add to their woes, the sudden rains submerged the roads making it difficult for two-wheeler riders.
Commuters who were stuck for hours together and in the chaos and confusion tried to get out from the internal roads which resulted in a further mess.
There are major traffic diversions at Porvorim due to construction of the elevated corridor. A traffic congestion was witnessed a day after the High Court had asked the contractor to comply with the suggestions made during the joint inspection by the authorities.
Reacting to the traffic congestion and long queues of vehicles on either side of the road, former Socorro panchayat member Soter D’Souza said, “The traffic blockade is happening due to movement of vehicles coming from Chogm road. This is also due to bad planning by the TCP department. The only solution is that single driven vehicles be stopped and asked to use the public transport.”
Former footballer Eurico Mascarenhas, said. “It is complete traffic mess at Porvorim. During the Socorro gram sabha, I raised the issue and had demanded that the PWD and traffic police be asked to give us a presentation. But nothing was shown to us as a result we could give our suggestions. Everyday the residents are facing hardships. The authorities are bothered and we residents are getting choked.”
Crispino Sequeira, a businessman from Porvorim said, “Somewhere there is political interference as business is getting affected. Two-wheeler riders and motorists often try to take short cut route and add to traffic congestion. There is need for proper ground work to handle the movement of traffic efficiently.”
