NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s call to promote youths at the AICC plenary here on Sunday prompted aging Goa Pradesh Congress President Shantaram Naik, a three-term MP, to step down from the post, which he was appointed on July 7, last year.
Shantaram said he was so impressed by Rahul’s vision of bringing in the new generation in the leadership that he took the decision then and there to resign.
He will be sending his resignation to Rahul on Tuesday.
Though Naik took the lead to quit on his own to pave way for a younger state party president, all those appointed to various positions, including the all-India general secretaries and secretaries and state presidents, will have to resign to give a free hand to Rahul Gandhi to make fresh appointments.
The plenary has already authorised him to appoint the members of the new Congress Working Committee (CWC).
Naik is believed to have sought to be relieved as the PCC President on April 12 when he turns 72.
He has been earlier also the PCC president and its general secretary and later an AICC secretary for many years.
