Workshop highlights importance of information security awareness

A one-day workshop on Information Security Awareness for parents, Teachers and students was held at Government Polytechnic, Altinho, Panaji on Monday. 
The workshop was organized by Goa College of Engineering, Farmagudi, in association with Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Hyderabad and Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Goa.
Information Security means protecting information and information systems from unauthorized access, use disclosure, disruption, modification or destruction.  In this connection, the main objective of the programme was to create Information Security Awareness among students, teachers and parents.  Around 30 institutions like IITs, NITs, DOEACC and Universities across the country participated in the programme. 
Awebsite www.infosecawareness.in has also been created for the purpose some time ago and is being updated in the interest of parents and children.
Sanjeev Nadkarni, CEO, Call Centre at British Group was the chief guest for the function.  Director of Technical Education and Principal of Goa College of Engineering V B  Kamat presided over the function.  Principal, Government Polytechnic Louis Fernandes was the guest of honour.
   Speaking on the occasion Nadkarni highlighted the importance of the information security awareness programme.  He said due to internet boom, a lot of home users with little or no prior knowledge with the threats and countermeasures are exposed to internet and the attacker can exploit to expand their base of malicious activity and use innocent people for their schemes.  Hence, the need to spread the education in school for children, parents and teachers and equip them with the needed knowledge he said.  He also congratulated the organizers for having organized the awareness programme.
 Dr V N  Shet, Head of Electrical and Electronics Department who is also the Convenor of the project, gave brief details of the project sanctioned by the Government of India with an total outlay of 70 crore. He said the Goa College of Engineering is expected to get around 40 lakhs for procurement of books and other related activities.
Louis Fernandes, Principal Government Polytechnic also spoke on the occasion.
A book on Information Security Education and Awareness, Government of India was released by the chief guest on the occasion. Vijay Borges, workshop Coordinator proposed vote of thanks.
