Says students are inconvenienced due to extended hours

PANJIM: Picking the pieces from the Goa government decision to increase school hours by 30 minutes, the Congress Friday demanded to revert to old school timings as students are facing hardships.
Addressing a press conference at Congress House, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subhash Shirodkar said government should first put in place the infrastructure.
He also demanded that State government should consider the geographical area and lack of infrastructure before blindly implementing the Right to Education Act.
“There are students in Curchorem who travel by train to schools. They have no trains to return home in the late hours. There are students from far off places coming to Cuncolim,” he said. “Extra hours in school also mean getting home late and starving till then.”
He complained the routine of the students has been disturbed with the decision.
When asked on the change in leadership in the Goa Pradesh Congress committee, Shirodkar said he is ready for the change which could take place any moment. “It’s for the party high command to take a decision on who should be the GPCC president,” he said while responding to a media question, adding “I expect a change anytime. As long as I am here, I will discharge my duties…”
To another question on rumours about toppling the government, Shirodkar who was accompanied by CLP spokesman Aleixo Reginald Lourenco, said the party is ‘not interested’ in toppling games.
“We are not here for toppling… We are not interested…We respect the mandate given by the people,” was his quick reply.
Meanwhile, the GPCC expressed deep anguish and sorrow over the loss of life of several hundred of people and property in the devastating torrential rains and flash flood in Uttarakhand.
