MARGAO: A Sunday chill spell following the recent spate of rains went horribly awry when the seasonal Nagarwadi waterfalls in Chendia village about 12 km away from Karwar turned out to be a killer spot for several young Goans.
Six persons are feared drowned, while the bodies of two have been recovered.
Three different groups from Ponda, Vasco and Raia had gone separately for a picnic to the waterfall which is quite popular among Goans. Altogether, there were reportedly around 50 people in the groups at the spot.
The bodies of two ladies 21-year-old Francila Pires and 29-year-old Fiyona Pacheco both residents of Raia were recovered by evening. Search for the remaining bodies was abandoned at 7 pm due to bad weather. The rescue operation will be resumed tomorrow.
The confirmed missing persons are 32-year-old Sameer Gavade from Ponda, 22-year-old Sidhu Chari from Vasco, 23-year-old Renuka and 38-year-old Marcelina Estebeiro from Curtorim.
According to Karwar police, this spot is quite dangerous as many deaths have occurred here. Two Goans had died here earlier this year.
The locals are apparently demanding that the picnic spot be closed due to the deaths.
Police were informed about the people being washed away around 2:30 pm. It is learnt that there was a sudden rise in the water level that washed away these people. Bodies were found at different places caught amidst the bushes and brambles.
