PANJIM: The Goa Meat Complex was all geared up to begin slaughter of cattle Monday; however no traders emerged with animals to slaughter showing that there are no animals available within the state for slaughter.
The Goa Meat Complex officials however promised to begin importing fresh beef from Tuesday from legal abattoirs outside the state to meet the state’s requirement.
Speaking to Herald, Lyndon Monteiro the chairman of the Goa Meat Complex said that the conditions imposed by the High Court that no animals from outside the state could be slaughtered at the complex was prohibitive.
“We were all geared up to begin the slaughter as per the High Court conditions and order. But no traders brought animals for slaughter. They say there are no animals in Goa fit for slaughter,” Monteiro said.
He was, however, quick to add that the Meat Complex would begin importing raw beef from other parts of the country and selling it within the state.
“I can assure you that tomorrow itself beef will be available, Monteiro said adding that two consignments have already been ordered and sold to the traders.”
Meanwhile, the lawyer selected by the Goa Meat Complex in the review petition they will be filing before the High Court has arrived in the state and the petition is expected to be filed soon.
Meanwhile, beef continued to be off the counters on Monday with butchers downing the shutters for lack of supplies.
