RAIA: Navelim Sporting Club edged out Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda, 3-1, to enter the quarter-finals of 1st Fernando Abranches memorial inter-village football tournament organised by United Club of Verna at Verna panchayat ground, on Monday.
The match started on a fast pace and Don Bosco Oratory missed the first chance to score through Elroy Barreto in the 10th minute of play, while Navelim SC’s Prestly Gomes’ powerful shoot from the edge of the box was punched away by goalkeeper of Don Bosco Oratory and remained 0-0 at half time.
In the second half, both teams eager to score, Navelim SC scored the first goal with a powerful header beating goalkeeper Carol Soares of Don Bosco Oratory by Ronaldo Pereira. Navelim SC increased their tally through Meliston Dias and Atif Shaikh scored the third goal. Edgar Noronha of Don Bosco Oratory pulled one goal back.
Ronaldo Pereira of Navelim Sporting Club was awarded the man-of-the-match by Isidor Rodrigues, former footballer of Mormugao Port Trust and Vasco Club.
