Combating Climate Change — The need of the Hour

Climate change is increasingly becoming a huge challenge for the global order. It is affecting every country on the planet, disrupting lives and economies. While the outlook can seem depressing, there is still a lot that can be done. Many countries across the world do adequately recognise the urgency and the importance of climate change, but there are significant differences on how they plan to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions. More than 130 nations in the world have promised to reach net-zero emissions by the year 2050. The UN climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland, last year brought a series of positive steps for implementing the Paris Agreement of 2015. However, very few nations have set out to chart a roadmap on how they plan to reach there.

In this piece, I outline a few realistic and concrete ways in which climate change can be tackled effectively. One of the most important ways to combat climate change is to collaborate with the private sector. No country can succeed alone in tackling any challenge. Collaboration is the stepping stone and key to combating climate change. We have witnessed the fact that when countries have coordinated efforts, immense progress has been achieved. On the other hand, when countries pursued their self-interest, challenges mounted. Therefore, the governments have to work together with companies as well as with economic organisations, think-tanks and industries to combat climate change. There is a need to understand the root causes of climate change and uncover viable approaches to solve it. Consistent collaboration by various stakeholders can surely reverse the damage caused by climate change.

Multilateralism can help combat climate change. Historically, the League of Nations, Congress of Vienna, and the United Nations paved the path for scientific solutions to address environmental issues. Even today, the best climate change discussions can be held with the help of multilateral organisations such as the UN Environment Assembly and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change among other bodies. There are a plethora of multilateral bodies that can be partners in the fight against climate change. These bodies can effectively debate these issues with a cross-sectoral approach and provide potential guidance on combating climate change to countries.

Finally, technology can play a good role in combating climate change. Technological advances can help develop techniques to address the problem of global warming. Artificial intelligence solutions are crucial to tackling challenges arising out of carbon management.

Climate change is a global problem and requires action from all stakeholders: governments, people, scientists and multilateral organisations. Moreover, these and other solutions will help the world build back better, from the current climate change crisis. Moving forward, the solutions will help make the planet more resilient, safe, green and healthy.
