Fisheries Minister doesn’t return calls, Director refuses to speak, what hope do Goa’s traditional fishermen have

We play out for the verbatim recording of the phone conversation with Director Fisheries SHAMILA MONTEIRO. When she was told the purpose of the call to ask her why has her department failed to implement the ban on LED fishing, flouted openly without a care by big boat owners, she responded as follows

Director Fisheries: You can get the story from the net, there are a lot of stories (Well Herald has done a lot of stories exposing the inefficiency of the Fisheries department, so we aren’t sure what she was referring to)

Herald: We need the view of the Fisheries Department…, that has to go

Director Fisheries: Hmmmm…., there are a lot of legislations, (mumbles). You can go through… you can speak to minister… I simply don’t want to say anything

Herald: So we want to know if there is ban on LED fishing what is the department doing?

Director Fisheries: I’m not saying anything… it’s already there no

Herald: If LED is being used at sea, how are you stopping it?

Director Fisheries: (sound of a click) She keeps the phone down.
