VALPOI/CANACONA: Heavy rains lashed Valpoi and Canacona on Friday impacting the day-to-day life of people in the taluka besides damaging standing crops. In Valpoi, the roads were submerged underwater and power supply in many areas was disrupted as the incessant rains pounded the Sattari Taluka.
Sattari has been witnessing intermittent showers for the last fifteen days however the retreating monsoon made its presence felt strongly on Friday afternoon with nearly 2.5 inches of downpour in just two hours.

Valpoi fire services stated that there no major loss of any kind reported. However stormy winds destroyed orchards and farms and the standing crops were damaged as the fileds were submerged.
Meanwhile, rivers in Sattari have become active again and a rise in the level of water was witnessed. If the rains continue to be incessant for next few days, there will be adverse effect on the Dabos Water Plant, said an official. According to officials, the rivers take at least two days to become clear after the rains and this may create shortage of drinking water in some areas.
“The daily life for many in the taluka was affected as roads were submerged; however, municipality workers were quick to reach the sites. They helped to ease the outflow of the water in just two hours,” said Valpoi chairperson Shaizin Shaikh.
Meanwhile, the monsoons also affected the crops in Canacona which are almost ready to be harvested. “There was heavy rain during the wee hours and the downpour continued throughout the day. This has affected the crops and if the rains continue, all the efforts will go in vain,” said a local farmer Shantaram Desai from Cotigao.
