PONDA: In a tragic incident, a father-son duo died of electrocution at Kapileshwarim, Kavlem in Ponda on Friday.
According to Ponda police, while repairing the terrace of his house, Vilas Pandari Raikar (67) came in contact with a livewire and died. He had used a ladder to climb up the terrace. The terrace was reportedly damaged by monkeys.
Few minutes later, his son Grahesh who was unaware of the incident noticed that Raikar was not in the house. He even went to the neighbour’s house to find out about his father’s whereabouts.
Later, he saw the ladder placed inside the house and guessed that his father might have gone on the terrace. Then, he went to the terrace where he saw his father lying on the floor. Worried that something was wrong, he rushed to his father’s help without realising that his father had been electrocuted. Consequently, he too came in contact with the livewire that was in his father’s hand and died within few minutes.
The son-in-law of the family who was present in the house noticed that his brother-in-law who had gone to the terrace in search of his father was not responding to his calls.
So, he went on the terrace and on seeing the father and son lying on the floor, he panicked. However, he immediately realised that the duo was in contact with livewire. Thereafter, he rushed down and informed the neighbours requesting their help. The neighbours immediately informed the police.
Ranjanish Kapileshwarkar, a neighbour, was in tears as he narrated the story to Herald.
“Few minutes ago the deceased boy Grahesh (24) had come to my shop asking for his father and went back. Within minutes there was a distress call from a neighbouring woman. I rushed to their help, but sadly the boy who spoke to me just minutes ago had breathed his last. I could not save him,” Kapileshwarkar said with tears in his eyes.
“The son was an electrical engineer, while the father was a former government employee working as an auditor of cooperative societies,” he said.
The locals and the police later shifted the bodies to Goa Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. Their final rites will be performed on Saturday morning.
