PANJIM: Goa will be fully
lit with LED lights as the Electricity Department is set to distribute 15 lakh
LED bulbs to 4.89 lakh consumers in the next two months. The State will become
the first in the country to have 100 percent coverage. The State will also
replace 1.66 lakh street lights with LED bulbs.
The Electricity Department
on Wednesday signed an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)
to launch the Union Ministry’s ambitious ‘Ujala Scheme’, providing affordable
LED bulbs to its consumers in a bid to make their homes energy efficient.

Power Minister Milind Naik
on Wednesday launched the implementation of DELP (Ujala) Project under
which each household will be provided with three 9 Watt LED bulbs, in the next
two months.
Addressing media persons,
Power Secretary IAS Kunal said Goa will be the first State in the country with
100 percent LED coverage in next two months. “The EESL will distribute 15 lakh
LED bulbs to the registered consumers at a cost of Rs 25 per bulb. The market
rate of the bulb is around Rs 450,” he said.
“These bulbs are better in
energy consumption and are India made,” he said.
The Secretary said usage of
LED bulb will help the Electricity Department in saving up to 78.56 million
units of power annually. Also it will help domestic consumers save power cost
up to Rs 1100 per 1000 electricity units.
“Our efforts are to reduce
energy cost of consumers, particularly of the lower income group,” the IAS
officer said adding after the domestic consumers, EESL would be also asked to
replace all the street lights with LED lights.
The UJALA scheme – being
implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) – has been widely
accepted across rural and urban areas of the country. The primary reason for
this mass adoption is the capability of LED bulbs to give consistent luminosity
even in low voltage, where incandescent and CFL bulbs usually fail.
