Urology, eye camp held at Bandora
PONDA: JCI Bandora-Marcaim in association with Savaikar Hospital recently conducted a free surgical, urology and eye check up camp in memory of late Gurudas Gaude at Mahatma Gandhi High School, Gaunem-Bandora. The JCI Bandora-Marcaim has been organising the medical camp since the last three years and this year over 115 patients availed benefit of the camp, states a press note. The chief guest for the inaugural function was Rotarian Shankar Kirleparkar. JCI Bandora-Marcaim President Saloni Naik welcomed the gathering. Dr Prahlad Savaikar, Dr Gokuldas Sawant, Dr Dipti and Dr Anant Bandekar were also present. Secretary Dilip Gaude was the project coordinator, added the press note.
Park renovation work nears completion
PORVORIM: The renovation work of the Chacha Nehru Park at Mapusa is nearing completion and the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has plans to inaugurate the park on the occasion of Gudi Padwa. Built in 1995, the park was the only recreational facility available for children in Mapusa, but due to lack of maintenance, the park fell into disuse over the years. The fountain was non-functional, while the wall on one side of the park had collapsed. The nullah adjacent to the park was filled with garbage and stagnant water. Besides, there were no sufficient lights in the park and the gates and railings had become rusty. After repeated requests from residents, the MMC decided to renovate the park and tenders were opened on June 21, 2012. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 26.66 lakh and the contractor was required to complete the work in 180 days. According to MMC Chairperson Sudhir Kandolker, the new park will have a jogger’s track, a fountain, a small stage, snack bar and toilet facilities. “Most of the new play instruments like long ring climber, slider and jungle rim round have been installed. MMC plans to inaugurate the park on the occasion of Gudi Padwa day,” added Kandolker.
Plea for new Shirgao VP building

MAYEM: Concerned about the precarious condition of the panchayat building, Shirgao Sarpanch Prakash Gaonkar and Panch Babuso Gaonkar have petitioned the State government for a new panchayat building. The building has developed cracks at many places and has endangered the lives of employees and villagers. At a recent panchayat meeting, the panchayat resolved to repair a building and have submitted a proposal to the government. Deputy Speaker Anant Shet had stated that a proposal for new buildings for the panchayats in Shirgao, Narvem, Ona-Maulingem and Mayem-Vaiginim have been submitted to the government and added that these projects were likely to get approved within a year.
According to villagers, the Shirgao Nagarik Kruti Samiti had made efforts to repair the panchayat building, but they admitted that the proposal did not go ahead due to many reasons.
Vasco school celebrates annual day
VASCO: St Andrew’s (ICSE) School, Vasco recently celebrated its annual day. Vasco MLA and KTC Chairman Carlos Almeida was the chief guest. The programme started with the lighting of the lamp by Almeida in the presence of School Manager Fr Jose Antonio Costa, PTA Chairman Kelly Fernandes and School Administrator Ivone Bravo da Costa. In his speech, Almeida thanked Fr Costa for starting the school. Fr Costa encouraged the students and teachers to continue in their contribution for the school.
Workshop for Madrasas held
VALPOI: National Commission of Minority Education Institution, Goa Desk, Coordinator Shaikh Suleiman Karol recently organised one-day workshop for minority institutions and Madrasas in collaboration with All Goa Muslim Jamat and Association headed by Akbar Mulla at Panjim. Justice M A S Siddiqui, Chairman of National Commission for Minority Education Institutions, was the chief guest, while Dr Shabistan Gaffar (chairman for Child Education Committee) and Anil Powar (additional Director of Education Department) were the guest of honours. Karol presented the statistics on Muslim institutions and Madrasas in Goa and representatives of Muslim institutions, Madrasas and Jamats and associations were present.
“This year, Government of India has sanctioned Rs 20.55 lakh for Madrasas, but only five Makhtabas have availed the benefit of the scheme and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan has spent only Rs 5.45 lakh on Madrasas and about Rs 14 lakh will be refunded to the Central government as it was unused. It occurred because no more Madrasas or Jamats has come forward to take the benefits,” informed Karol.
Abdul Rehman said the State government should be little softer towards Muslim institutions as these institutions are badly in need of help from the Directorate of Education and government, as the permission to start Std 11 is rejected for five years of Unity HS, Valpoi, AIM Salcete Higher Secondary is without any financial aid, National HS Valpoi is without the building and Al-Jadeed HS Chimbel is in need of financial aid to upgrade the school premises.
Fr Zefirino D’Souza, Fr Domnic and sister Yeveth represented the Catholic institutions. Fr D’Souza said the government should help to establish institution of their own choice for minority community.
Justice Siddiqui congratulated the organisers for arranging such type of programme in the State and said minority institutions should obtain minority status from NCMEI Government of India New Delhi and then they will get each and every benefit that they deserve.
The Maulana Aazad Award introduced in memory of first education minister Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was presented to Justice M A S Siddiqui by Akbar Mulla, president of All Goa Muslims Jamats and associations, while Dr Shabistan was awarded by Ruksana Bi Sheikh, president of women wing. The Maulana Aazad Award was also awarded to Anil Powar by Justice Siddiqui for the contribution of his selfless and honest services in the Education department.
GBA mulls tech panel on Plan
PANJIM: Fed up with the government’s inaction and failing to draw guidelines, the GBA has decided to form its own technical committee for guidelines to rectify the Plan. GBA convenor Sabina Martins said they had time and again stressed the need for drawing guidelines for rectification of the plan but neither did they get their appointment with CM, nor any guidelines were in place.
Summer camps at Quepem
PANJIM: Tom & Jerry Creative School will conduct two summer camps for children in the age group of 4 to 15 years in Quepem (next to the municipality).
