PORVORIM: Unhappy with most municipal councils in the State for failing to utilize development grants provided by the State government, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza has warned that the State government would stop grants to those municipal councils failing to use the funds.
“This has come to light during an audit inspection of the municipal councils. Some municipal councils have neither proper development plans nor the manpower to execute the development plan, if formulated,” said D’Souza, while addressing a press conference in Mapusa on Wednesday.
“Henceforth, if development grants given by the State government are not utilized by the municipal councils, then the government will be forced to stop development grants to them,” said D’Souza.
“The State government during the Golden Jubilee celebration year had released special development grants ranging from Rs one to three crore to the municipal councils depending on its class, but it has been observed that most of the municipal councils have still not utilized these grants,” added D’Souza.
He said the Mapusa Municipal market has not been utilized commercially.
