MAPUSA: Halima Super Center, a gift shop, located on ground floor of Cosmos building, Morod-Mapusa, was gutted in fire, on Sunday midnight.
According to Mapusa Fire Station In-Charge Bosco Ferrao, the control room received a call at 12.07 a.m. informing about the fire. Immediately a team of Mapusa fire fighters, led by Sub Officer Dnyaneshwar Parab and his team comprising Prakash Ghadi, Ashok Volvoikar, Vishnu Naik and driver Devendra Naik rushed to the spot.

However, by the time, the team reached the site, the shop was in flames. Another vehicle, led by Salim Shaikh, Vishwanath Korgaonkar and driver Swapnesh Kalangutkar was also called in to help the fire fighters contain the fire.
The fire team had to press an earth mover into service since the products in the shop were made up of plastic which had first to be segregated in order to get the fire under control.
It took almost three hours for the team to douse the fire completely.
The Fire Services team also used fire hydrants installed in the market to refill the vehicles.
Goods such as gift items, photo frames, plastic buckets, mobs, toys and other such products were destroyed in the blaze. Owner Mohamad Menon claimed the loss to be around Rs 15 lakh. However, the fire station in-charge Bosco Ferrao has asked the owner for a stock statement to verify the estimated loss.
The cause of fire is not known. Mapusa Fire Station officials said they will be writing to the Electricity Department to ascertain the exact cause of fire.
