PANJIM: Goa State Horticulture Corporation (GSHC) Chairman Kiran Khandolkar has urged youth not to avoid agriculture, as it is the backbone of the country.
“Previously there was a view that people who are less educated and poor take up agriculture but after BJP government came into power there was a different wave, as a lot of youth and graduates started taking up farming and agriculture,” Khandolkar said.
“As per the records in 2012, GSHC acquired approximately 44.86 tonnes of vegetables from farmers by giving them good support price and this has been on the increase and this year till October, 397 tonnes of vegetables were bought by the corporation,” he said.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar also said that agriculture has increased in Goa. “Previously agriculture in the State was on the decline but after BJP took over agriculture started flourishing, as a lot of people started opting for agricultural schemes in which good support price was given to farmers,” said Parsekar.
Parsekar also stated in the last four and half years GSHC has bought 531 tonnes of vegetables from the famers.
