CUNCOLIM: From last two years the non-functional garbage treatment plant of Cuncolim Municipal Council has created menace at the plant site. Twenty-four months have passed since the garbage plant is not functioning and no one seems to be interested in repairing it.
In an RTI reply, the CMC revealed that there is minor technical problem with one of the machines in the plant.
Cuncolkars are asking why Council is taking two years to get the minor repairs done? One year passed since the new Council took over but this Council also showed the same lethargic attitude towards garbage treatment.
There are mountains of garbage stored at the garbage treatment plant at Cuncolim Industrial Estate. Wet garbage has been not treated since last two years. Cuncolkars fear if it continues there is a danger of another Sonsoddo at Cuncolim.
The council is doing house to house garbage collection from all 12 wards and charging fees.
In 2012 during former Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao, the council had started New Garbage treatment plant at Cuncolim Industrial Estate by spending Rs1.6 crores. The plant has capacity of treating 10 tonnes of garbage per say was treating 1.5 to two tonnes of garbage every day. For the last two years about 1,200 tonnes of garbage remains at plant without treatment.
When asked Chairperson Mrs Mascarenhs said “there was no sufficient fund with Council to repair plant machinery. She said recently received Octroi fund from government and they has made provision of Rs32 lakhs to operate treatment plant.
