MARGAO: The Velim village panchayat on Tuesday carried out inspections of the controversial hotel project for tax assessment.
A panchayat team headed by Sarpanch Melvyn Sanches and panch members inspected the hotel premises to carry out assessment to impose commercial tax on the project.
After the inspection, the sarpanch informed that the hotel had been paying an annual tax of Rs 4,500, adding that fresh assessment of the premises might fetch annual revenue to the tune of Rs 19,000. “The panchayat have no records as to how the body had assessed and calculated the annual tax of Rs 4,500. We will place the assessment report before the panchayat body meeting and then at the gram sabha for discussions”, Sanches said. When his attention was drawn to the complaints lodged by the gram sabha members in the past that the hotel had build rooms in excess of the approved numbers, Sanches said that site inspection of the hotel had revealed otherwise.
