PANJIM: In a major relief to mining trader Imran Khan, one of the main accused in the mining scam, the District Sessions Court has granted him permission to withdraw Rs 21.50 crore from his account which was seized by Special Investigation Team (SIT) Mines during the probe last year.
SIT had seized various bank accounts of Khan as part of the investigation into the multi crore scam also involving some Congress leaders, bureaucrats and mining barons.
In April this year, the High Court of Bombay at Goa had directed SIT to release Rs 3.5 crore to the mining trader.
The relief came much after the high court had earlier this year dismissed his petition for de-freezing bank accounts holding Rs 69 crore. The SIT had also found 530 different fixed deposits (FDs) in a bank based in Margao.
Khan, currently out on bail, was arrested by SIT for his alleged links in the illegal extraction of iron ore on September 12, 2017. SIT suspects a nexus between the alleged accused and an influential politician from South Goa.
