‘Humanity’ still alive in some

Very few understand, subject to having conscience and a clean heart to know what “Humanity” means. It is like food to the humans, without it, humans are no more than a dead body. Humanity makes you worth living a human life by being sensitive to others’ needs, worries and sorrows. But it all depends if those others can read humanity or they feel that they are on another planet and hardly care being selfish. But, when you care for other beings, indirectly you are standing for almighty and none of the work in this world is superior than this when it comes to serving other living beings, unselfishly.

The day you get glimpse of how colourful life becomes when you have humanity in yourself, you get the feeling of togetherness, a feeling of human love, a feeling of understanding sympathy and the quality of being humane benevolence. We all know being a good human is very important in our life as one understands the problem of another person, giving solutions or a helping hand. However, humanity has several definitions from the simple being to all the people that make up the human race, it can also mean showing kindness, empathy, benevolence, and compassion to fellow humans as they say, no humanity no civilization.

Please make note that Humanity and Cruelty are both two faces of a coin. Some people become selfish when they become richer and humanity gets diminishing within them.

Let’s revisit what once Mahatma Gandhi said “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”

Ominous signs

The rapid rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in several states of India is a cause for concern. It was a hasty decision by the government to relax the Covid-19 restrictions in some states of the country. Covid-19 can spread when people breathe, talk, cough, or sneeze. A well-fitting mask keeps the virus from reaching others. It can also protect the wearer from getting infected. Also, masks stop people from touching their mouths and faces — contaminated hands are another way for the virus to spread. Even if you have taken all the three doses of the vaccine, keep wearing your mask.

Solve Panjim’s traffic mayhem

That Panjim will be a Smart City may always remain a dream only. There is need to urgently decongest the city. Shifting the schools to Cujira has not eased Panjim’s woes.

The authorities have miserably failed to deal with the traffic mayhem in Panjim. To add to the chaos hundreds of taxis are illegally parked all over the city. The law requires that the taxis be stationed at the designated taxi stands or at the residence of the owner. Besides, the double parking especially on 18th June Road and Atmaram Borkar Road must all stop.

Traffic cops conveniently continue to turn a Nelson’s eye at all those casino vehicles which are illegally parked in the No Stopping-No Parking Zone along the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg.

The residents of Sao Tome ward behind the Post Office have been suffering for the last many years on account of the parking nightmare created by the casinos. The situation gets worse especially on the weekends with Casino staff and customers haphazardly parking their vehicles disturbing the peace and tranquility of the residents in the area.

Panjim MLA Babush Monserrate in May 2019 had promised to remove the casinos from the River Mandovi within 100 days but quickly reneged on that solemn vow. Now as Minister for Waste Management he has assured to solve the Sonsoddo garbage nightmare within 18 months. Let us wait and watch on this latest promise.

‘Cable cars’ will attract tourists

It is learnt that there will be a massive boost for tourism in Goa. Asserting that the centre will not restrict funds for tourism infrastructure, the Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik has reportedly said that the centre is ready for projects including a golf course, an oceanarium and a water sports park in order to attract high-spending tourists in the State. The centre has reportedly also approved a proposal to take up the development of the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Similarly the Colva and Calangute beaches will be taken for further development.

If feasible the State could also think of having a ‘Cable Car’ facility in order to attract high-spending tourists. Several world famous places of tourist attraction do have cable cars in which the tourists can have a joyride. Goa is blessed with a lot of greenery and intertwining water ways. The view from above will indeed be breathtaking and a joy to behold.

It must be said that cable cars hold a huge potential for tourism. Several States in the country too offer the facility a cable car ride for the tourists. Of course all precautions need to be in place in order to avoid an accident like the one which took place recently at Deoghar in Jharkhand.

Let’s us live in peace and harmony

This has reference to the report ‘No country will be victorious in Russia-Ukraine war’ (Herald 3 May 3, 2022). Very rightly stated, words of wisdom, one would say. There will be no winner in this ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. What has Russia achieved by attacking Ukraine – only destruction all around. The fallout of this war has been very bad. And as Prime Minister Modi has said, there will be more serious impact on developing and poor nations. It’s time all nations understood the futility of war. It simply does no good to anyone. This current war against Ukraine is clearly a misadventure on the part of Russia as America has done in the past.

I think we in our country, ought to learn a few lessons from this war. Being a dominant country, Russia must have hoped to finish off the war in a week’s time. But the Ukrainian indomitable spirit has kept the Russians at bay. Just because one is powerful you cannot suppress the other. Our nation today is being torn apart by what is called a ‘hate’ war.

Our nation today, stands divided on religious, language, lines. We can see so much of venom being spewed and the situation seems to be getting volatile. We need to understand the futility of this hate campaign, of gaining a hold over the minorities in our country. We are all citizens of one nation and we must live in peace and harmony with each other. There is no other way! There will be no winner!

Bank ATMs should be open for 24 hours

Who on earth has decided that Bank ATM cash machines times should be limited to 9 am to 5 pm. How can people do business and economy run smoothly if ATMs are not open 24 hours? Under the BJP government looks like this is the new normal of doing business. Even on public holidays and weekends some machines are closed. The economy can’t run if cash dispensing is in such pathetic condition.

Banks have made huge profits and they should engage good security to man these machines and ensure that they function properly everyday and cash is available timely when empty. It’s high time that the Goa government and Reserve Bank of India comes heavily on these banks for restricting the times of ATM machines.
