MAPUSA: Saligao United registered a solitary goal victory over Goa Velha in 22nd late VM Salgaocar Trophy football tournament organized by Saligao Sporting Club at Saligao ground, Thursday. There was no score at half time.
After a barren first half, Saligao broke the deadlock in the 40th minute through MA Francis in unlikely fashion after the latter’s throw-in created confusion in the rival danger zone and entered the goal beating the rival defenders and goalkeeper.
Goa Velha dominated the game but their strikers could not convert.
In 4th Milagres Football Club, here, Candolim Sports Club grounded St Anthony’ Marna, Siolim 4-1 to enter the quarter-finals at Bodgeshwar ground, Thursday.
Candolim started positively and surged ahead in the ninth minute through Alton’s powerful strike.
Stung by the setback, St Anthony’s regrouped and equalized three minutes later, after Terence converted a spot-kick.
Just before the lemon break, Candolim’s Gauresh made it 2-1 with a deft placement.
Candolim dominated the second session and pumped in two more goals through Paul and Sagar.
