MMC bans single-use plastic bags during 125th Damodar Bhajani Saptah

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council on Friday discussed preparations for the upcoming 125th annual Damodar Bhajani Saptah in Vasco.

After chairing the special council meeting, Mormugao chairperson Girish Borker said that plans are afoot to make the 125th year of Saptah festival, a memorable one for the devotees and residents. He disclosed that during last year’s festival, the municipal council fetched a record revenue of Rs 98 lakh and this year the council had set a target to collect more than Rs one crore revenues.

Being the 125th year of the Saptah, the Mormugao municipal council has resolved to give a donation of Rs 1.25 lakh instead of Rs 50,000. The council will also appeal to every household, hotels, buildings and other establishments situated around the Damodar Temple to illuminate their premises so that the entire area gives a festive look.

Borker said that all ward councillors have also been asked to request temple committees and residents in their respective wards to illuminate them. 

During the meeting, the council decided to ban single-use plastic and to deploy security guards around the municipal garden to prevent vendors from creating a nuisance while, furniture stalls will be permitted in the old area since the government had agreed to open the road below the Up Ramp, Borker said.
