Fishing season starts tomorrow

PANJIM: The
Goa coast will be abuzz with fishing activity Monday onwards as thousands of fishermen are preparing to sail after the
61-day long ban on fishing.

The annual
ban from June 1 to July 31 prohibits fishing by mechanised boats. The
government prohibits fishing by vessels fitted with mechanical means of propulsion
and by means of trawl net and purse seine net, along the sea coast and the
territorial waters of the State during this period. The ban, however, exempts
fishing by registered motorised canoes using gill nets and fitted with outboard
or inboard motors.

The All
Goa Fishing Boat Owners Union had approached the government urging to extend
the fishing ban period to 120 days to curb overexploitation of fishing
resources in the Arabian Sea. However, a decision is yet to be taken.
