Ayodhya verdict: day passes off peacefully

Police in North Goa heaved a sigh of relief as the day passed off peacefully amidst tight security after the judgment in the much-awaited Ayodhya title suit was delivered on Thursday evening.
The security agencies including the entire 5000-odd police force were posted across the state, especially at communally sensitive locations, identified by senior officers during review meeting.
As many as 800 armed police personnel were deployed in the north district and additional 40 armed pickets were stationed at strategic locations.
“We carried out intensive patrolling throughout the north district to ensure that no untoward incident occurred,” Superintendent of (North Goa) Police Arvind Gawas told Herald.
“Apart from the extensive placement of forces, Sub Divisional Police Officers were also on the field,” he added. Gawas personally monitored security measures which were put in place since last mid-night.
The higher-ups were updated every hour and also CID divisions from all police stations were reporting to the head quarters throughout the day. A senior police officer said that the district was peaceful.
Nearly 250 armed personnel were deployed in Tiswadi taluka alone. A large contingent of policemen was kept on stand by in case of emergencies. “We had identified all areas for police security, patrolling, etc.
DySP Deu Benaulikar said that sensitive areas were given special attention. “There was no untoward incident reported,” he said.
Goa government had conducted nakabandi all across the state and ensured strict police vigilance. The state will be under police cover for next couple of days depending on the circumstances.
DGP’s reaction: DGP Bhim Sain Bassi said that ‘Goa police thanks the citizens for maintaining the peace!’
“The situation in Goa is normal. We have made elaborate arrangements to maintain law and order. Both districts are given additional reserves besides, special patrolling and pickets have been deployed across Goa.”
He further said, “We are in regular touch with the peace committee members through informal meetings. However, if need arises, we will hold formal meetings.”
Marcel correspondent adds: In view of Section 144 imposed in the State due to the Ayodhya verdict, Ponda Police directed organisers of a religious meeting to relocate the programme, which was to be held at Goa Engineering College ground, Farmagudi-Ponda, on Thursday.
The meeting was to be addressed by a famous national spiritual leader. However, the meeting was later held in a hall in Farmagudi.
Ponda Police had objected to the open air venue at GEC ground, Farmagudi, citing law and order situation.
According to sources in district administration, the organisers were not granted permission by the deputy collector in view of Section 144 imposed all over the State.
The district administration issued orders to Ponda Police to take necessary action. Later, police directed the organisers to shift the venue.
Meanwhile, Ponda Police also maintained vigil in the area to avoid any untoward incident. Police were seen patrolling the area, as police personnel were posted at various specific locations.
According to Ponda Police, the situation was normal in and around Ponda town.
