PANJIM: The Traffic Police have registered 4,344 cases of traffic rule violations during a special drive, which started on January 13.
Several teams are formed to crackdown on violators. The Traffic Police said as on January 18, maximum 2,479 challans were issued for riding a two-wheelers without helmet, 1000 for tinged glass, 175 for overspeeding, 157 for driving without licence, 103 for speaking on mobile phone while riding/driving, 99 for carrying passengers in goods carrier, 62 for violation of traffic signals, and 20 challans were issued for allowing underage to ride/driver vehicles.

Margao Traffic Cell reported highest 447 cases against riders found without helmets followed by 367 in Mapusa and 366 in Panjim. Similar, Ponda Traffic Cell recorded highest 177 cases of tinted glass.
Of the total challans issued, Margao had maximum of 607 fines imposed followed by 558 in Panjim, 496 in Mapusa, 416 in Ponda and 400 in Calangute.
The last calendar year reported 2,844 accidents, an increase of 19.75 per cent compared to the year 2020 that registered 2,375 accidents. In these accidents, 218 were fatal wherein 226 persons were killed which included 152 motorcyclists. This again, is an increase by 01.35 per cent as compared to 2020.
Details shared by the traffic police further revealed that 97.08 per cent accidents occurred due to rash and negligent driving and two-wheelers account for 43.17 per cent. The national highways have accounted for 37.90 per cent accidents even as speed radars have being deployed during the night.
Even though the country was in lockdown for most time in 2020 the State saw 7,96,258 motor vehicle cases booked, more than the total cases booked in 2021 which stood at 7,41,319.
The fine amount collected in 2020 was Rs 9.13 crore approx, while the year 2021 saw the collection drop to Rs 8.65 crore approx.
