Mapusa SDM orders closure of Calangute dance bar

CALANGUTE: To prevent law and order problems, the Mapusa Deputy Collector cum Sub Divisional Magistrate has ordered the closure of a dance bar at Umta Vaddo, Calangute, in which illegal activities, including prostitution, were allegedly taking place.

This was informed by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, who displayed the order at a media briefing in his office on Saturday. The order, issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, will be in force till March 10.
“Several illegal activities were flourishing in the Calangute coastal belt due to inaction by the authorities. However, when the BJP came to power in 2012, it immediately cracked down on premises encouraging illegal activities. Many commercial establishments like massage parlours and dance bars were shut down with the cooperation of locals and NGO ‘Save Calangute’,” said Lobo.
He continued, “Recently, a dance bar started operating without permission from the Calangute Panchayat, and illegal activities were suspected to be happening there, with girls entering the commercial establishment. The locals raised their voice and demanded action against the illegal happenings, while the authorities were kept informed. I support the villagers’ fight against illegal activities and urge the people of Goa to come forward and stop such activities taking place in their areas to save the name of Goa as good tourist destination.”
