VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik on Tuesday refuted charges that he was discriminating against some councillors and that the council was indulging in scams.
Naik was reacting to the allegations of discrimination and scams levelled by two councillors Krishna alias Daji Salkar and Rachana Borkar.
Naik said both these councillors were trying to play dirty politics in view of the forthcoming assembly polls, as Salkar is aspiring to contest election from Vasco.
Addressing a press conference in Vasco, Naik and Vice Chairperson Sashikant Parab lashed out at both the councillors for calling the council corrupt.
Naik even challenged them (Salkar and Borkar) to resign from the council as they were elected under BJP panel and get elected on their own.
“Firstly, I want to clarify that we don’t treat anyone as opposition or ruling as everyone has been elected by the citizens and the council has to take up works in all the wards. Secondly, the ruling panel in the MMC was formed only with the backing of BJP. Even the ruling councillors including Salkar and Borkar were elected because of BJP. However, if they think that they got elected on their own strength, then, they should immediately resign from the council and get elected as councillors on their own,” Naik said.
Reacting to the allegation that Chief Officer Deepali Naik and he (Naik) have been acting like agents of the local MLA, Naik said, “It is true that the chairperson, chief officer and MLA have to work together. Only then developmental can take place. However, this does not mean that the council or the chief officer acts like an agent of the MLA.”
