MARGAO: Five Salcete police stations have booked 1805 cases under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996, which prohibits disposal of garbage in public places, drains and sewage for the first six months of this year.
As per above act no person, by himself or through another, shall knowingly or otherwise throw or cause to be thrown in drain, ventilation shaft, pipe and fittings, connected with the private or public drainage any non-biodegradable garbage however large number of people dump their garbage in open places in various parts of Salcete.

For the first six months of this year Salcete police stations — Margao, Maina-Curtorim, Colva, Cuncolim and Fatorda — police have booked 1805 cases and collected fines of Rs 180,500, said police.
Out of these 1805 cases Margao police has booked 334 cases and collected a fine of Rs 33, 400 while Maina-Curtorim police has booked 363 cases and collected Rs 36,300 in fines. Colva police has booked 211 cases and their fine collection was Rs 21,100 while Cuncolim pólice booked 515 cases and collected a fine of Rs 51,500.
Five Salcete police stations, in the year 2020, booked 3556 while in the year 2019 they booked 3899 cases.
A police officer said that there has been a considerable rise in cases booked under the Act this year.
