Mayem villagers moves HC for suspension

PANJIM: A Mayem gram sabha member has filed a writ petition before the Bombay High Court at Goa demanding suspension of the Mayem Sarpanch, Secretary and the Panchayat Director for an alleged scam worth lakhs of rupees, in Mayem-Vainguinim panchayat.

The petitioner Kashinath Mayekar, and other locals also demanded the resignation of the local MLA for claiming ‘there is no illegality in the village panchayat.’
Mayekar alleged that Sarpanch Veena Vishwas Chodankar and Secretary Suresh Phadte withdrew Rs 7 to 8 lakh from the panchayat treasury for ‘unknown’ reasons over the last 10 months.
Attaching withdrawal vouchers with the petition copy, the complainant supported by a group of locals has sought a vigilance inquiry into the scam and suspension of the duo along with the Panchayat Director for failing to take action against them.  “For a single work in the local panchayat, the Sarpanch has withdrawn a lump sum amount twice without any explanation. This is just one example. There have been many withdrawals without taking the panchayat members into confidence or explaining for what purpose the money was being used,” Subhash Kinalkar, one of the complainant’s supporters said.
The local group indicated that they would hold a press conference soon to expose the scam.
