CALANGUTE: In the wake of number of agitations in Calangute in recent months over the operation of dance bars and a gram sabha resolution to close them down, the Calangute Village Panchayat body met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and urged him to cancel the Excise licences which allow bars to stay open after midnight.

Following the agitations, residents had urged the village panchayat to cancel their licences, but the panchayat had claimed that the dance bars, which are allegedly hotspots of illegal activities such as prostitution, are open late because of the Excise licence which allows them to stay open till early morning.
Problems such as prostitution, touts and other illegal activities were also brought to the notice of the Chief Minister.
Panchayat members also brought to the Chief Minister’s notice other issues including sewage sludge from the garbage treatment plant on Calangute plateau entering the water table and polluting the wells in Gauravaddo, the pending demarcation of coastal properties in sandy areas, and dumping of unsegregated garbage by the Tourism Department contractor near Tito’s Lane.
