CALANGUTE: The Calangute panchayat has acquired two tractors in a bid to encourage agricultural activities and reduce the burden on farmers in the constituency.
The panchayat has acquired the tractors at a cost of Rs 10 lakh, which were launched Sarpanch Reshma Kalangutkar in the presence of Deputy Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, Panchas Geeta Parab, Savio Gonsalves, Anna Maria D’Souza, Sajjan Parsekar and Subhash Salgaonkar.
Deputy Sarpanch Joseph Sequiera informed that the tractors would be available on minimum charges per hour for the farmers and would help the farmers to cultivate their fields, which have remained barren for years.
He added that most of the fields are converted and sold for construction and to avoid this, the panchayat wants to encourage farming activities.
The panchayat also instructed the farmers to form a society so that they can take benefits of the schemes and subsidies available in agriculture sector.
Panchayat also distributed seeds for their kitchen garden.
