MARGAO: Abhishek Hiremath, a 25-year-old resident of Kakumoddi in Quepem, has been convicted by the District and Sessions Judge of South Goa for attempting to murder his former teacher, 62-year-old Laxmikant Shikerker from Assolda, by pouring petrol on him.

The Quepem Police arrested Hiremath after he allegedly tried to kill Shikerker by dousing him in petrol and attempting to ignite him with a lighter.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint lodged by Shikerker. In his complaint, he stated that on November 8, 2021, Hiremath unlawfully entered his home and stole cash amounting to ₹6,990 from his wife’s purse.
He further reported that while he was asleep, Hiremath poured petrol over him and attempted to set him on fire.
However, Shikerker managed to thwart the attack and apprehended Hiremath.
The police subsequently seized the materials used in the attempted crime. According to the police, Hiremath confessed to the attack, explaining that he sought revenge against Shikerker for beating him when he was studying in Class X. The police noted that this confession indicates a motive rooted in revenge.
Despite the incident, police described Hiremath as an excellent student. Public Prosecutor V G Costa represented the state in the case and examined witnesses, including the investigating officer, PSI Mayur Sawant.
PSI Sawant filed the charges in court, and the trial has commenced. Sentencing for Hiremath is scheduled to take place on December 17.
