CANACONA: Simon Rebello was on Wednesday elected as chairperson of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC).
Rebello defeated Suchita Naik Gaunkar by 6-4 votes. Rebello along with his supporting councillors, who were reportedly camping outside the State, arrived at the municipal office on time before the special meeting to elect the chairperson.
As two nominations were received to the post, presiding officer and Chief Officer of Cuncolim Municipal Council called for ballot voting. Presiding officer Maya Pednekar in the presence of CMC Chief Officer and Canacona Deputy Collector Sudhin Natu declared Rebello elected as chairperson.
Ratnakar Dhuri, Sandesh Gaonkar, Ajay Bhagat, Deputy Chairperson Rajeshri Pagui and Champa Pagui voted in favour of Rebello, while Hemant Gracias, Ramakant Naik Gaonkar and outgoing chairperson Mahadev Dessai voted for Suchita Naik Gaunkar.
Soon after the results were declared, Rebello declared his panel as independent and fully supportive of government and local MLA and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar.
“I will work in tandem with the government to bring all possible development and improvements in all the 10 wards of CMC,” said Rebello.
