MARGAO: Will the Margao council set the ball rolling for the recovery of huge outstanding tax arrears amounting to crores of rupees and levy garbage collection fees on the city hotels and restaurants.
Tuesday meeting of the civic body would deliberate and discuss on two issues relating to the recovery of taxes and levy of garbage fees on hotels and restaurants. Take the case of the recovery of arrears.
Taking strong cognisance of the huge outstanding arrears raised by the Urban Development Minister, the Council has mooted a proposal to engage 5-6 workers in each of the 20 municipal wards for recovery of arrears with a target to cover 200 houses per day by each of the workers and to enter the data in the computer on a day-to-day basis.
Sources in the Civic body said that the staff engaged for the exercise will be purely on temporary basis and a decision will be left for the City Fathers on the issue.
Meanwhile, based on a directions received from the Director of Municipal administration, the Margao Municipal Council is planning to start door-to-door garbage collection from the city hotels by charging fees according to their classification.
The issue of collection of waste from hotels has been hanging fire since the last several years, but the proposal could not be implemented for want of will on the part of the Civic body.
