MARGAO: With the Government of India pushes for the development of ports to cater for the needs of growing consumption of goods, we should consider sustainable environment-friendly development, smart ports, green shipping, and net zero carbon, said Frank Viegas, president, Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI).

He also said that there are lots of opportunities in the field of shipping sector and the government needs to focus on creating awareness in this regard amongst the youth of Goa.
On the occasion of National Maritime Day, Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) held a mega health camp at Nuvem, on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media persons, Frank said, “The government should tap on the shipping industry which will benefit the seafarers and the State in general.”
“There is a need of creating awareness amongst the Goan youth, mostly in the rural areas to tap the job opportunities in the field of shipping. The government should take up this initiative so that the youth from places namely Sattari, Quepem, Canacona and others will be aware of the opportunities,” he added.
He also stressed on the initiative of Central government which is focussed on developing the inland waterways.
“There will be lots of employment if the inland waterways are developed, and hence the government needs to create more and more awareness about the same amongst the youth of Goa,” Frank said.
At the mega health camp, the GSAI was also urged by Dr Philip Mascarenhas present at the venue to follow-up with regards to starting a course in Nautical Science, as the students from Goa were forced to travel to other States to do the courses.
“In Goa, we don’t have courses in Nautical Science. It is my request to the GSAI to take up the issue and get the courses started in the State. One of the colleges from South Goa had taken initiative towards providing courses in marine, but nothing happened since for the last three years,” he said.
Meanwhile, hundreds of locals participated in the mega health camp, wherein free consultation with doctors, besides free medicines was also distributed.
